one of the main requests i get asked as a blogger + former teacher is to see more easy toddler activities in this space….we do them on a regular basis but i usually don’t get around to sharing them as much as i should. it’s one of my goals for the new year to share with you some form of toddler activity on a weekly basis that we do! from crafting to process art, baking to gross motor activities, make sure to check in on tuesdays for your baby/toddler/preschool activities!
with a newborn hangin around these parts soon, an 18 month old toddler and 3.5 year old twins, i will do my best to adapt to all ages and show how to make these activities easier or more advance, but if ever there is a question, feel free to reach out!
canvas snowflake resist
materials needed
paintbrushes {these are my fav for acrylic + these and these are my toddler go-to!}
canvas {i buy in bulk and have them all year for various projects!}
acrylic paint – my favorite brand {or washable if there is concern for mess or a mouthing baby/toddler – acrylic typically has more vibrant colors}
**we used teals, blues, purple, silver + glitter and just stock up at hobby lobby when it’s on sale!**
tape {paint tape works best but scotch tape worked just fine for us and it’s what i had on hand!}
spray glitter {or modge podge / glue + glitter}
baby wipes. always baby wipes!!
process
1. tape shape of snowflake {if you’re more creative then feel free to go crazy… i wanted a more simple look to go in their playroom}
2. set out paint… my go-to is a paper plate. it makes for easy clean up and it allows for mixing of colors if they want to experiment.
3. paint! i told the girls to go slow and try not to paint the tape… of course they did, which is just fine, but since the scotch tape isn’t super sticky on canvas, i wanted them to try to be careful not to take the paint off.
4. i goofed this step up… but take the tape off before you add glitter if you’re going to do a spray glitter. it dries fairly quickly and it made for a mess when i first tried to take it off. we simply took the tape off and then re-sprayed the canvases. the girls had a difficult time doing this by themselves so they took part by telling me where to put the glitter and how much!
above all else, remember that art should be a process for this age! it’s all about exploring, mixing and coming up with their own masterpiece. just like a snowflake, no two will look the same. if they only paint half the canvas? no problem. mix all the colors or only use one? great! remember to try to engage with the process rather than focusing on the product!
Very doable at a Grammie’s house too! I’ll keep this concept in mind for art projects!
That’s my kind of fun and they turned out great! ❤️🐝👱🏻♀️
Looooooove these projects! I had my girls do them last year, and it was so fun to pull out and see them this year. Our cold weather is done for the year (in San Diego), but maybe i’ll get a jump start and have them make some hearts for Valentine’s Day 😀
So cute! My kids have made these at Michaels on a field trip before, I love the blue tones you picked for them to use though!!
I love this so much! We’ve done resist art before, and this makes me want to do it more with my guys! As a side note, I’d love to know your process with these activities with the older girls and your youngest! Mine are 3 and 1 and so I’m having to learn how to keep them both doing age appropriate things at the same time!
Your girls did such a great job with these!
