water safety for toddlers + GIVEAWAY! | goldfish swim school

after my post about miller’s swim lessons at goldfish swim school, i received so many questions about how the girls have been doing… and spoiler alert: they LOVE it.
more importantly though, we are seeing some huge improvements in the girls’ water skills.

lila + piper have officially been in swim lessons for 7 weeks and have put in quite a bit of hard work…and let me tell you, they are so proud of themselves. they are in the ‘mini 3’ class, which has a 1:3 teacher-to-student ratio and are focused on mastering specific skills. the teacher works with one student at a time while the other 2 students sit on their turtles on the side of the pool. the focus is on students being able to do these skills unassisted, such as:
– kicking
– underwater dips
– back floats
– pulling paddle
– wall hold
– jumpking in underwater
– rollovers

the two things i have been most impressed by {aside from their patience in dealing with squirmy two year olds} is how they modify the curriculum to meet the needs of each individual student and how they make repetitive instruction fun. they practice pouring water on the student’s head to practice going under water and lila even got to practice pouring it on her teachers! they are SO creative and give us ways to work on those skills at home too…in the bathtub, at dinner and at play so the girls aren’t only learning while they’re there, but at home as well.

the girls have had SO much fun these last two months and while that’s awesome and they get so excited when they find out it’s wednesday, they are, more importantly, learning life saving skills. the fact that we have all winter in a 90 degree pool to practice these skills and really get comfortable around water is so amazing to me. i’m already looking forward to warmer weather next year and for them to show off their swimming skills!

each week they work on specific skills and when they master one of the skills, they earn a ribbon for that skill.  this past week, both girls went underwater and ‘swam’ by themselves!! i was seriously amazed when i watched lila jump off the platform in the middle of the pool and kick to her instructor. by no means was she pulling and swimming to the edge, but this was the first step and they were pumped to get their ribbon!
