the holidays are quickly approaching and with it, the opportunity to create memories and traditions with your family. here are 5 christmas traditions you need to start with your family for your kids to remember!

holly + jolly right there, friends.

as a mama to 4 sweet babes, building family traditions is SO important… the smells that take you back to your childhood, the snow falling and the beautiful memories just waiting to be made… it’s magical!

here are 5 christmas traditions you need to start with your own family to create lasting, lifetime memories!

5 christmas traditions with your family

 1. cut your own christmas tree
my parents started this tradition before my sister and i were born and i’ll never have it any other way… going to choose our own tree is a process. we go and assess every single tree, lose countless mittens as we try to mark the contestants. i’ll tell ya, there’s nothing better than the scent of a fresh cut tree in your living room!

2.  deck the halls
another big one, it’s all about the egg nog, talking about every ornament as we carefully choose the perfect location. our family is all about the personalized hand print ornaments and working as a family to place every ornament just perfectly. of course they get moved time and time again but these are some of my fondest memories as a kid!

3. host a hot chocolate playdate
this is one of my favorites! there’s just something so cozy about snuggling on a blanket, sipping something so warm… clearly the girls have got this one down. get all the hot cocoa date inspo HERE!

4. baking christmas cookies
one of my all time favorite memories as a child was baking christmas cookies with my grandma… from the delicious recipe that has been passed down to sneaking that spoonful of cookie dough, nothing screams christmas traditions like a good ole’ session of baking christmas cookies! be sure to check out the easiest + most delicious recipe for christmas cookies and don’t forget to leave them out on this adorable personalized plate + mug for Santa!

5. christmas stockings
in our house, we hang our stockings above the fireplace and while we’re sleeping, santa fills the stockings and places at the end of the beds. there’s nothing better than waking up to those stockings and going through each thoughtful gift…even the mandatory toothbrushes! see our fool-proof gift guides for some inspiration!

gah these sweet faces. give me just one more… can we all just sign a petition to present to zach? puh-lease?!
..anyways…

the seasons of mamahood are ever changing and this one is no different. i never understood when people would say to savor every moment because they are fleeting, and guys, they just are. the tantrums are exhausting and yet those sweet baby snuggles make it all worth it. i wouldn’t trade these crazy days for anything and i never want to take these moments for granted. these babes, they’ve made me into the woman i am today and i’m coming into this holiday season with a thankful heart and a few extra cups of coffee.

i am so excited to kick off this holiday season with our crazies. we usually jam pack it with as many holiday plans and if there’s one thing we’re good at, good at, it’s creating memories.
i’m always looking for new traditions to start with our kids…what’s your favorite holiday tradition with your family?!

a HUGE thank you to  ivory lamb photography for capturing our crazy crew!

  1. Your kids are so cute! We started the special Christmas pajamas and giving our kids an ornament on Christmas Eve when my oldest was a baby. In addition to that, we used to have a Gingerbread man countdown to Christmas. The kids decorated paper gingerbread men, and then every day from Dec 1-Dec 24 they opened up one and had an activity to do. Some were altruistic (decorate a tree for wildlife) others weren’t. Carter’s is such a great brand, the clothes are so cute and the ones my kids wore were great quality. Our first pair of Carter’s overalls was worn by all 5 of my kids.

  2. Carters is my favorite go to place to shop for my grandbabies! Quality is wonderful, price point is perfect. They look adorable in those outfits!

  3. These are such cute photos! I love the coordinating outfits – and what great deals going on at Carter’s! I still need to get Christmas stockings for us! We are reading the Shepherd on the Search Advent devotional book as a family this year for our new tradition!

  4. I LOVE Carters!! I need to get my girls coordinating outfits for their Christmas photo. And gosh, these pics are just so dang cute!!! I love the one with the girls toasting their mugs.

  5. Cutest little pics! I love family traditions at Christmastime…thanks for sharing!

  6. My favorite Christmas tradition is making the kids wait at the top of the stairs on Christmas morning while “Mommy and Daddy” get to scope out what Santa brought downstairs. My parents did it when we were kids and it built up so much anticipation that the first sight of presents on Christmas Day was so much fun! I hope my boys feel the same joy my sister and I felt as kids.

  7. We cut down our own tree for the first time last year. We got permits to go into our local national forest and just drove around and hiked to different trees and cut one down! I didn’t even know that was something that people could actually do, lol. I thought if you wanted to cut your own tree you had to go to a tree farm… in my defense I grew up a semi-city girl. 😉 We’re doing it again this year and the kids have already been talking about it for months! And we also love Carters pjs for Christmas, I actually bought their Christmas Eve pjs yesterday!

  8. I love Carter’s. Their pajamas are the only ones I buy now because they are seriously the best! We have a couple of fun Christmas traditions I know my kids are looking forward to, including wrapping Christmas books and then unwrapping and reading one each night before bed. Seriously so much fun!
